This aerial photo, taken from higher altitude pointing south over the 340 highway, gives an excellent  view of the headwaters area of three distinct watersheds: The Tusket, Meteghan and Sissiboo rivers.

Nowlans' unusualnowlans_lake_Aug_2011s.jpgal year round yellow-green  color is the result of dense waterplant growth mixed with cyanobacteria. Shallow calm waters combined with sunshine, warm temperatures  and massive nutrient -overloading have created this permanently  tangled mess of organic growth at the top of the Meteghan River chain.

The picture shows at least a dozen large sources of nutrient pollution running  into the three watersheds: an aquaculture operation on Hourglass lake,  a feed 'Kitchen' on Nowlans , and mink farms along  highway 340.
