Hives, or urticaria, is a common allergic reaction in which a rash or welts, red to pink in color, appear on the skin. Hives can be caused by allergic or non-allergic mechanisms. In a majority of chronic cases, the exact cause is unknown.  They appear and disappear at irregular time intervals - when they disappear, they do so without a trace.
