Hysteria is a type of psychiatric disorder in which a wide variety of sensory, motor, or psychic disturbances may occur. In hysteria the patient makes use of the mental mechanism of dissociation to cope with the unaccepted reality and conflict. 

A neurotic disorder characterized by a wide variety of somatic and mental symptoms resulting from dissociation, typically beginning during adolescence or early adulthood and occurring more commonly in women than men.
