Jaundice is a yellowing of the skin, whites of the
eyes, and body fluids. It is caused by an increase in the amount of
bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellowish pigment that is
produced from the breakdown of heme, primarily from hemoglobin and red
blood cells (RBCs).

I think my baby's skin looks a little yellow. Is
this normal?
Yes, about 50 to 60 percent of full-term babies have
a yellowish cast to their skin — called jaundice — during their first
week or two of life. In fact, virtually all newborn babies have some
jaundice, but it's not always noticeable. |

Jaundice is a symptom
of many medical problems but it is most often associated with
conditions of the liver or the gallbladder. Jaundice causes yellow
skin and eyes because of an excess amount of the bile pigment bilirubin
in the fat layer under the skin. Either the body is producing too much,
or it's not getting rid of it fast enough.
