Tetanus, is caused by a bacterium found just about everywhere, but especially in the soil. Germs enter the body through openings in the skin. Any wound or laceration, even a tiny scratch, can be an entry point. It takes about a week for the bacteria to establish itself in the body. One of the first symptoms is stiffness in the muscles of the jaw (thus the common name lockjaw)... a stiff neck, headaches, spasms in the limbs and convulsions follow.  Neonatal tetanus occurs after a baby is delivered in unsanitary conditions, especially if the umbilical cord cut is contaminated.

Tetanus (Lockjaw, Clostridium tetani Infection

Tetanus (lockjaw) is a serious disease that causes painful tightening of the muscles, usually all over the body. It can lead to "locking" of the jaw so the victim cannot open his mouth or swallow. Several vaccines are used to prevent tetanus among children, adolescents, and adults including DTaP, Tdap, DT, and Td.

Tetanus (lockjaw) in the Child Care Setting Tetanus, also called lockjaw, is very rare in the United States due to the very high immunization rates of persons living here. Tetanus is difficult to treat, but is completely preventable through vaccination. Children receive tetanus vaccine in combination with the pertussis and diphtheria vaccine. After childhood, adults need a booster injection every 10 years to make sure they are protected
