Measles is caused by a type of virus called a paramyxovirus. It is an extremely contagious
infection, spread through the tiny droplets that may spray
into the air when an individual carrying the virus sneezes
or coughs. About 85 percent of those people exposed to
the virus will become infected with it. About 95 percent of those
people infected with the virus will develop the illness called measles.
Once someone is infected with the virus, it takes about seven to 18
days before he or she actually becomes ill. The most contagious time
period is the three to five days before symptoms begin through about
four days after the characteristic measles rash has begun to appear. |

Measles
is rarely seen in Canada due to high vaccination rates. Measles is
spread through contact with droplets from the nose and throat of
infected persons. Less commonly, particles from an infected person can
stay in the air for long periods of time and infect others in the same
room or in neighbouring rooms. Measles is one of the easiest viruses to
spread from person to person.
People infected with measles can spread the disease to others 4 days
before the rash appears and up to 4 days after the rash appears.People born before 1970
are considered protected from measles. Presently children receive two
shots of measles vaccine, one after their first birthday and the other
before they are 18 months of age. |

Measles is a common childhood disease that now
can be prevented with a vaccine. Signs and symptoms of measles include
cough, runny nose, inflamed eyes, sore throat, fever and a red, blotchy
skin rash.
Also called rubeola, measles can be serious and even fatal for small
children. While death rates have been falling worldwide as more
children receive the measles vaccine, the disease still kills several
hundred thousand people a year, most under the age of 5 |
