Comments: I was thrilled to find this site! My maternal grandmother's name was "Rosalie Octavie Muise".  Her parent's names were also "Muise".  My mother (Marie Rosaline Lorgere) tends to be tight-lipped about this side of the family, I suspect because of the atmosphere of the day when she was growing up.  I think she felt that one minority was enough.  Rosalie married Alvinie Anatole Lorgere.  She was born in "Eelbrook" -- now called St. Anne du Ruisseau.  My sisters and I are fascinated that we have Mi'kmaq in our family history and family tree.  We would welcome contact with anyone out there who might know something about any of this.  I know my mom has told me stories about the expulsion of the Acadians, but she never mentions if her family was involved.

Keeping nice and toasty warm in the Yukon (and not being flooded yet).

Comments: I only spent two months in Yarmouth, but it has stayed with me in my heart for the past 5 years.  I fell in love with all the sights and the people in this little town.  I am planning to take my son back next year.  I cant wait.  I miss the ocean and the beautiful landscape.  I loved sitting at the lighthouse (tranquility bas #1) and miss the calm feeling it brought me.  I will return to that lighthouse with as much awe as the first time I saw it.  Yarmouth is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen, the first of course being the mountains.  My son and I cannot wait to see our friends and family again, but most of all I cant wait to see the ocean!!

We were so very glad we did. The food is excellent and the service excellent as well. We met the Owner and were told it had only been open since September of last year. We know we will be back.

A beautiful spot for a relaxing meal. Best wishes for continued success. You have a great community.

Comments: How could I possibly find more information about my family who once lived in PV?  My great grandfather was James Kenneth Crosby (b. 10 Apr 1861) married to my great grandmother Lucetta May Cann (b. 1858).  They emigrated to California in about 1910.  My great grandfather's first wife, Blanche Crowell Crosby (b. 1870 & d. 8 Sep 1891), is buried in the church cemetery in PV.  Both my grandfather, Murray Harvey Crosby (b. 4 Nov 1895) and his sister Winifred Eva Crosby (b. 18 Feb 1899) were probably born in PV.

I often wonder if I have any family left in the area.  If you could put me in touch with someone there who might be interested in helping me, I can probably provide enough genealogy to help find a distant cousin.  There are Porters, Freemans, Ellenwoods, Sullivans on my line.  As near as I can determine, my Crosbys moved from Yarmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts to Yarmouth, NS in about 1785.

My mother was Rose Aimee Surette, born Aug 26, 1896 on Surette's Island. Her father was Lutrop (Luther?-spelling).
I just finished my grandfather's genealogy (Damien Hurlburt, born Aug 8, 1868 in Quinan) and traced him back initially to a Titus Hurlburt born 1760 who immigrated to Yarmouth Co @ 1780, and subsequently to a Richard Hurlburt born in Stratton England @ 1576. Any direction or info re:
Surette's Island would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Comments: About the middle of July 2005 marks The 40 year of a murder that look place on  Tooker St Yarmouth N.S. I was 10 years old at the time it was a foggy night, My mom was talking to her friend who was on her steps in the back yard. You ever heard kids will say the just anything, well because it was so foggy, that the only reason I can come up with now I said"what a nice night for a murder' the next morning I heard a boy yell extra, extrea read all about it, murder in yarmouth, I thought I was dramming but I heard it agin, My bedroom window was open, I got out of bed and went down stairs and herd my mom and the lady  next door outside taking about it.
Today I still think of that foggy night ,I am unable to walk up tooker st at night as I get cold chills,I have read that newspaper agin just a fews months ago  as it was in a my brother's spare bed room with older old papers. It something i like to forget but coming home and seeing the fog  came in at night brins me back to that 10 year old boy in the back yard. Just thought i share this story with you

I am glad I came accrossed it.

And yes, all these years later, I would still love to live in Rockville, I still speak of the location on the Hilton Road, that I once picked out.  And for anyone that knows rockville, they would know the location... Strawberry hill.

Comments: Wow...It's amazing how stories get so twisted. A funny thing is that my sister married a Calgarian this summer, during the time of the shark scramble. Alot of his family and friends all came down for the wedding. Those pictures look alot like the pictures that his uncle took, while he was down here...but then again, alot of people were snapping pictures when that shark was caught! Interesting...maybe when they visit Calgary this summer they will tell the real story.

Comments: My great aunt, Margaret (Mitchell) Berndtson (1905-1999) hailed from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and attended Ellenwoods Kindergarten and the Yarmouth Academy. Her mother ________ Saunders used to live on Lake George Hill and they attended Providence Methodist church until they sailed from Yarmouth to Boston aboard the Prince George in 1926, bound for West Newton, and later Waltham, Massachusetts.

Her grandfather, Jesse Crosby, was a mate on the Brigatine X. Aagua (spelling?), which was lost at sea September 3, 1874. Jesse was survived by his wife, Sara (Saunders) Crosby, a daugther (name not known) and two sons, Eugene and Warren.

As a young boy, I visited Nova Scotia, sailing on the Bluenose from Maine, and recall visiting a light house run by my family in Cape _______, Canada. From family stories, I know one relative was the Harbor Master and, it's been said, one was an owner of John's Cove Fisheries - but I don't know what is fact or fiction.

After my great aunt's death, I received her copy of "Up from the Sea", and, after reading her notes, want to locate my family in Canada.

If anyone reading this is related to or knows the names mentioned, I would love to hear from you. Thank you.

Jason McElhiney Mitchell.

Comments: Since the most important issue is Yarmouth seems to be taking a stand against same gender marriage, my partner and I have decided not to spend nearly $3500US in a week traveling to yarmouth, digby and halifax.

All the businesses advertised on you site must agree with your point of view. I am sure they do not want any of the tourism cash from a couple of gays benefitting your community either.

I have canceled all plans to travel to Nova Scotia this summer based upon your warm greeting.

Webmaster Comment: Their are over 20,000 files on this web site.  Their are over 20,000 people in the area.  To focus on one file or one persons opinion, in such a narrow minded way is not what I would expect from someone from New York.   You have the right to believe what you wish and so do I.   I personally do not agree with same sex marriage.  One of my sons does not agree with me neither do my sisters.  I do not think someone should feel threatened by different points of view.  If you do not choose to visit Yarmouth the loss is yours.  It is a beautiful place with beautiful people.  A police officer expressing his sadness over his transfer from this area comment that "even the criminals in Yarmouth are nicer then criminals else where".   I have friends that are gay and if I tell them I do not agree with their life style they just say "so what".

Comments: Hi!! We live have lived in Short Beach since 1985. Our farm was originally owned by Alexander Mc Crea who bought ninty five acres in 1829. He built the house we now live in ; the year 1830. There is information about the Mc Crea and Harris families at the Yarmouth County Museum Archives.
As Alexander Mc Crea originally did; we also farm on the remaining ten acres of the original farm.

Comments: To TODD HATFIELD. My father still lives in the old homestead at Gardners Mills. His mother's name was Margret Moses. She married Guy Hanf. Both are now deceased. My sister knows Roger Hatfield that lives across the Braemar Farm, in Deerfield. I just happened upon your comments by accident. If you come across this I would be interested to hear from you!
Please contact me at the email address above.
     Thank You,
     Susie

Comments: I just wanted to ask the gay New York couple to please not think that all Yarmouthians are against gay marriage.  I'm a fifty year old married (to a man) woman and I feel that everyone has the right to find love where ever they can and I certainly feel that gay people (yes, folks they ARE people!) have as much right to wed as anyone else.  There are always a few big mouths flappin' their narrow minded opinions in the hope that they can sway other people viewpoints. They should just mind their own business.
